Courts Handling Potter County Traffic Tickets

Potter County is home to the bulk of Amarillo, a city that spans both Potter and neighboring Randall County. Amarillo Municipal Court is one of the busiest municipal courts in the Panhandle and handles the majority of traffic citations issued within Amarillo city limits in Potter County. For citations written outside city limits, the four JP courts handle cases by precinct.

Amarillo Municipal Court operates its own online systems and processes a high volume of cases each year. IH-40 through Amarillo is heavily enforced, and violations on that corridor go to municipal or state court depending on where exactly the stop occurred. Texas DPS tickets on the interstate may go to the local JP court or state court.

Under Art. 27.14(c) of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, paying a ticket without appearing counts as a guilty plea. Courts send that conviction to DPS, which posts it to your driving record. Know your choices before writing a check.

The Potter County official website at mypottercounty.com provides access to county court services and contact information for JP courts and the county clerk. This is a good starting point for finding out which precinct court handles your case and getting direct contact numbers.

Potter County Texas website portal for traffic ticket records and court information

The Potter County website provides county court services, JP court contacts, and other resources for residents looking up traffic citation records in Amarillo and surrounding areas.

For a statewide search, the Texas Office of Court Administration runs TOPICs at topics.txcourts.gov/CitationsPublic. This free public tool lets you look up citation records from many Texas courts by citation number, name, or driver license number. Amarillo Municipal Court may have its own online search portal through the city's website as well.

The Texas DPS driver records portal is a separate resource for checking how ticket convictions have affected your driving history. Driver records are available for a fee online or by mail.

What Traffic Records Contain

Each citation record in Potter County includes the citation number, stop date, time, and location. The officer's name, badge number, and agency are part of the record. Defendant information covers name, date of birth, driver license number, and vehicle details. The violation section shows the specific statute and the offense description.

Once a case is processed, fine amounts, court costs, and case outcomes are added. Guilty, dismissed, deferred, or pending, that status becomes part of the public record. These are public records in Texas and can be accessed through the court or online search tools.

Ticket Options in Potter County and Amarillo

Amarillo and Potter County drivers have the same options as drivers anywhere in Texas. Pay the ticket, fight it in court, or look for a way to avoid a conviction.

Deferred disposition under Art. 45.051 of the Code of Criminal Procedure is one strong option. The court holds your case for 90 to 180 days. Pay a fee, stay clean, and the case gets dismissed. No conviction on your record. Ask the court or the judge about deferred before paying.

The Driving Safety Course under Art. 45.0511 is another avenue. Complete a state-approved defensive driving course and submit your certificate to the court for a dismissal. You must request this before your court date, not hold a CDL, not have used this option in Texas in the last 12 months, and not be charged with going more than 25 mph over the limit. A Type 3A certified driving record from DPS is required ($12 online, $10 by mail). Check TDLR for a list of approved courses.

DPS Records and License Status

Traffic convictions from Potter County and Amarillo courts are reported to the Texas Department of Public Safety. DPS maintains your driving history and sells records in several formats. A Type 2 three-year record costs $6.50 online or $6 by mail. A complete Type 3 history is $7.50 online or $7 by mail. Mail requests go to Texas DPS, P.O. Box 149008, Austin, TX 78714-9008.

Note: Texas ended its driver point system in 2019. But four or more moving violations in 12 months, or seven or more in 24 months, can still lead to a license suspension review by DPS.

Unpaid Tickets and OMNI Holds

If you skip a court date or fail to pay a Potter County ticket, the court can report the case to DPS under Transportation Code Chapter 706. DPS blocks your license renewal through the OMNI program. You pay the fine plus a $10 OMNI fee to lift the hold, or $30 for older cases from before 2020.

Check your status and pay at texasfailuretoappear.com. Each unpaid ticket adds a separate fee. Courts can also issue warrants for unresolved cases, so don't let things sit.
