Traffic Courts in Carson County

Two JP precincts serve Carson County. Both handle Class C misdemeanor traffic violations written by county and state law enforcement. Your citation will identify which precinct court has your case. For help reaching the right court, call the County Clerk at (806) 537-3873.

Carson County is located in the Texas Panhandle, crossed by I-40. Speed and lane violations on that interstate make up a large share of the tickets issued here. DPS troopers patrol I-40 and US 60 regularly. Most of those citations go to JP court.

Small counties like Carson often have JP judges who are not attorneys. The law still allows this in Texas. The court is still a court of record. Your rights are the same as in any other Texas traffic court.

Texas provides a public citation search at topics.txcourts.gov/CitationsPublic. Search by ticket number or name. The system shows whether your case is active and what court holds it. It often shows your court date as well.

If the ticket doesn't appear, give it a few days. Newly issued tickets don't always appear in the system immediately. You can also call the County Clerk directly to ask about your case status.

Note: Under Article 27.14(c) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, paying a ticket in Texas is treated as a guilty plea. The conviction is reported to Texas DPS and added to your driving record.

Your Options for Resolving the Ticket

Pay the fine and close the case. This is the simplest option but it's a conviction. Most people don't realize the impact until later.

Request deferred disposition under Article 45.051. The judge defers your case for up to 180 days. You pay court costs and a deferral fee. If you stay out of trouble during that period, the ticket is dismissed. No conviction reported to DPS. This is worth asking about before you pay.

Request a defensive driving dismissal under Article 45.0511. You take a state-approved course and submit the completion certificate plus a Type 3A driving record. The ticket gets dismissed. Rules: no DSC in the last 12 months, no CDL, not more than 25 mph over the limit, not in a construction zone. The judge must approve the request first.

Missed Court Dates and Warrants

If you miss your court date in Carson County, the JP court can issue a capias pro fine warrant. This warrant enters law enforcement databases and can result in arrest during a future traffic stop. Address missed court dates as quickly as possible by contacting the court and asking what steps to take.

Texas DPS also has the authority to block your license renewal for unresolved citations under the OMNI program. Transportation Code Chapter 706 authorizes this. Each unresolved citation adds a $10 hold. Check your status at texasfailuretoappear.com.
