McLennan County Traffic Ticket Records

McLennan County traffic ticket records come from two main sources: the Waco Municipal Court for citations issued inside Waco city limits, and five Justice of the Peace precincts for county and state highway violations. Waco is the county seat and the dominant city in the county, with significant traffic on I-35, Highway 6, and other major corridors. This page covers how to find your citation, pay your fine, and what options exist to keep a ticket off your driving record. Call the county clerk at (254) 757-5040 for help with JP precinct information.

Courts That Handle Tickets

If your citation was issued by a Waco Police Department officer inside Waco city limits, the Waco Municipal Court handles that case. The Waco Municipal Court is at Waco City Hall and can be reached through the city's website at waco-texas.com. They have their own payment system, search tools, and deferral process separate from the county JP courts.

Citations issued by DPS troopers, the McLennan County Sheriff, or on state or county roads outside Waco go through one of the five JP precincts. The precinct number is listed on your ticket. If you're not sure which court to contact, call the county clerk at (254) 757-5040.

For JP court citations, the Texas OCA's TOPICs Citation Search tool lets you look up case status by name or citation number. Waco Municipal Court records are not on this system, so contact that court directly for city-issued tickets.

For a county JP court citation, use the TOPICs public portal. Enter your name or citation number. This tool shows you which JP precinct has your case, the status, and any upcoming dates. It covers all five McLennan County JP precincts.

For a Waco Municipal Court citation, visit waco-texas.com/departments/municipal-court or call the court directly. The city court has its own records system. You can often check case status and pay fines online through the city portal.

If a very recent citation doesn't appear in either system, wait three to five business days and try again. Courts enter data at different speeds, especially right after the stop.

Paying Fines in McLennan County

For Waco Municipal Court fines, the city's website at waco-texas.com has payment options including online payment. For JP court fines, go to the precinct court on your citation. Call ahead to confirm accepted payment methods and the total amount due, since court costs are added on top of the base fine.

Paying a fine means pleading guilty under Article 27.14(c) of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. The conviction is sent to Texas DPS and appears on your driving record. If you'd rather avoid that, look into deferred disposition or defensive driving before you pay.

Unpaid fines or missed appearances can trigger an OMNI hold on your license. Check your status at texasfailuretoappear.com. A $10 fee is tacked on for recent OMNI holds beyond the original fine.

Deferred Disposition

Deferred disposition under Article 45.051 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure gives you a chance to avoid a conviction. The court holds your case open for a period, typically 90 days. You pay a fee, meet any conditions the judge sets, and stay violation-free. At the end of the period, the case is dismissed. No conviction goes to your record at DPS.

Both Waco Municipal Court and McLennan County JP courts offer deferred disposition. You must request it before your scheduled court date. For Waco cases, contact the municipal court at waco-texas.com to ask about the process. For JP cases, call the precinct court directly.

Defensive Driving Dismissal

You may be able to clear a ticket through a defensive driving course under Article 45.0511 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. Rules: request before your court date, no DSC use in the past 12 months, no CDL, and not cited for going 25 mph or more over the limit. You'll need a certified Type 3A driving record from Texas DPS at $12.

Take a course from a provider approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Submit your completion certificate and driving record to the court. The ticket gets dismissed with no conviction reported to DPS. This option is available for both Waco Municipal Court and JP court citations if you qualify.
