JP Courts and Jurisdiction

Falls County's four JP precincts cover different geographic areas of the county. Which precinct has your case depends on where you were stopped. The citation itself should name the court. If you're unsure, call the county clerk at (254) 883-3300 and they can help identify the right precinct and give you contact information for that court.

JP courts have jurisdiction over Class C misdemeanor traffic violations. These are the everyday traffic offenses: speeding, running a stop sign, failure to yield. Fines are set by the judge and can vary. State fees are added on top, so the total owed is usually more than the base fine amount printed on your citation.

Start with the TOPICs Citation Search from the Texas Office of Court Administration. Enter your name or citation number to see if your record is in the statewide system. Falls County is a smaller rural county, so data may not be as current as in larger urban counties. If you don't find your case, call the court directly.

If you think there's an old citation or a license hold related to Falls County, check the Texas Failure to Appear portal. A hold means your license renewal is blocked until the underlying matter is resolved.

Paying a Traffic Fine

JP courts in Falls County generally accept in-person payment by cash, check, or money order. Some may accept credit cards. Call the specific precinct to confirm before going in. You can also ask whether mail-in payment is accepted, which can save a trip if you're paying a straightforward fine.

One thing to keep in mind: paying the fine is legally a guilty plea. Article 27.14(c) of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure is clear on this. Texas DPS receives a report and the conviction appears on your driving record. If you want to avoid that, you need to act before paying.

Deferred Disposition

Deferred disposition under Article 45.051 is probably your best option if you want to avoid a conviction. Ask the court before your trial date to defer the case, usually for 90 days. Stay out of trouble during that period and it gets dismissed. A fee is typical, and the judge decides. It's not guaranteed, but courts in smaller counties often grant it for first offenses and minor violations.

Defensive Driving Dismissal

The defensive driving dismissal route under Article 45.0511 also keeps a ticket off your record. Requirements: ask before your court date, haven't used DSC in 12 months, no CDL, not more than 24 mph over the limit. You'll need a Type 3A certified driving record from Texas DPS, costing $12. Courses must be licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. After completing the course, you submit both your certificate and your driving record to the court and the ticket is dismissed.

Your Driving Record

Texas DPS handles all driving records. Order online at dps.texas.gov or by mail using Form DR-1 to Texas DPS, P.O. Box 149008, Austin, TX 78714-9008. Costs: Type 1 is $4.50, Type 2 is $6.50, Type 3A is $12. Texas eliminated its point system in 2019, but your record still matters. Multiple violations in a short period can lead to a suspension review regardless of points.

The Texas DPS driver license portal is the main state hub for license and record services. Use it to order records or confirm your license is in good standing.
