Which Court Has Your Case

If your ticket was issued by a county deputy or state trooper on a county road or state highway, one of the four JP precincts has jurisdiction. Your citation will show which precinct you need to contact. The county clerk at (979) 968-3541 can help you identify the right JP if you're not sure.

If you were stopped by a La Grange city officer within city limits, the La Grange Municipal Court handles your case. Municipal court citations are separate from JP court cases. Contact La Grange directly if you believe your ticket is a city citation. Other small cities in Fayette County may also have their own municipal courts.

The Texas OCA's TOPICs Citation Search covers most JP courts statewide. Try searching by name or citation number. New records take a few days to appear, so give it a week if the stop was very recent.

If the online search doesn't show your record, call the county clerk at (979) 968-3541 or go directly to the precinct listed on your citation. Court staff can look up your case, tell you what you owe, and let you know what your options are.

The Texas Failure to Appear portal is the right place to check if you're concerned about a license hold from an old Fayette County citation. OMNI holds block your license renewal until the case is resolved and fees are paid.

Fines and Payment

Fayette County JP courts typically accept cash, check, or money order at the courthouse. Call the specific precinct to confirm payment methods and hours. Some courts are starting to offer card payment, but it's not universal for smaller county precincts.

Paying your fine counts as a guilty plea. Article 27.14(c) of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure makes this clear. Texas DPS will add the conviction to your driving record. If you'd rather avoid that, look into deferred disposition or defensive driving before you pay anything.

The OMNI failure-to-appear program adds fees and blocks renewal if fines go unpaid or court dates are missed. The fee for clearing an OMNI hold is $10 for post-2020 violations and $30 for earlier ones.

Deferred Disposition

Deferred disposition under Article 45.051 is usually the cleanest option for keeping a ticket off your record. Ask the JP court before your court date to defer the case, typically for 90 days. If you don't get another violation, the ticket is dismissed. You pay a fee, and the judge must agree to grant it. It's not a guaranteed outcome, but many courts in smaller counties grant it readily for first offenses.

Defensive Driving Option

Under Article 45.0511, completing a state-approved defensive driving course can result in ticket dismissal. You need to: request it before your court date, not have used DSC in the last 12 months, hold no CDL, and not have been going 25+ mph over the limit. A certified Type 3A driving record from Texas DPS is also required, costing $12. Courses must be licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. After finishing, submit your certificate and driving record to the court for dismissal.

Driving Records

Your Texas driving record is managed by DPS. Order it at dps.texas.gov or mail Form DR-1 to Texas DPS, P.O. Box 149008, Austin, TX 78714-9008. Type 1 is $4.50, Type 2 is $6.50, Type 3A is $12. Texas doesn't use points anymore, but a pattern of violations within 12 to 24 months can still put your license at risk.

Full Texas statutes are at statutes.capitol.texas.gov. The state driver services page at texas.gov/driver-services covers renewal, reinstatement, and record access.
