Traffic Tickets in Wichita County

Traffic citations in Wichita County are Class C misdemeanors. US-287 and US-82 are main corridors through the county, and DPS runs regular enforcement on these routes. Wichita Falls is the largest city in North Texas and has a large police force that also writes a significant number of citations.

Two separate court systems handle traffic cases here. The Wichita County JP courts have four precincts that cover the county and unincorporated areas. Wichita Falls Municipal Court operates independently and handles violations issued within city limits by Wichita Falls PD. Check your citation carefully to see which court is listed before you respond.

Paying the fine without appearing is a guilty plea under Art. 27.14(c) of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. That conviction is sent to DPS and recorded on your driving history. Contact the court before the deadline on your citation if you want to fight the ticket or seek an alternative.

The county clerk at (940) 766-8100 can direct you to the right JP precinct. For Wichita Falls Municipal Court questions, contact the city.

The TOPICs public citation search at topics.txcourts.gov/CitationsPublic is free and covers many Texas JP and municipal courts. Search by citation number, name, or driver license number to find case status, court dates, and fine amounts. The tool is maintained by the Texas Office of Court Administration.

If your JP court case isn't in TOPICs, call the county clerk at (940) 766-8100 or visit the Wichita County courthouse. For Wichita Falls Municipal Court cases, contact the municipal court directly, as those records are separate from JP court records.

What the Citation Record Shows

A Wichita County traffic citation record contains the citation number, date and location of the stop, officer details, and the defendant's identifying information. The violation code and description identify the law broken. The fine and court costs are listed once the court sets them.

Once the case closes, the record shows the result: paid, dismissed, deferred, or warrant issued. These records are public in Texas. Request them from the court or look them up through the state's online tools. Older cases may be paper only at the courthouse.

How to Resolve a Wichita County Ticket

Pay your JP court fine at the precinct listed on the citation. Call ahead to check hours and payment options. For a Wichita Falls Municipal Court fine, use that court's payment system. The total you owe is the base fine plus state court costs. Always confirm the full amount with the court before you go.

Deferred disposition under Art. 45.051 CCP is available in Wichita County JP courts and Wichita Falls Municipal Court. The judge holds the case for 90 to 180 days. Meet the conditions and the ticket is dismissed. No conviction goes to DPS. You pay a fee but avoid the mark on your record.

The Driving Safety Course (DSC) under Art. 45.0511 CCP works in both court systems. Take a TDLR-approved defensive driving course and the court dismisses the citation. You must request DSC before your court date, not hold a CDL, and not have used DSC in Texas in the past 12 months. Speeding more than 25 mph over the limit disqualifies you. You need a Type 3A certified driving record from DPS, costing $12 online or $10 by mail.

Texas DPS and Driver Records

Traffic convictions from Wichita County JP courts and Wichita Falls Municipal Court are reported to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Texas ended its point system in 2019. Four moving violations in 12 months or seven in 24 months can trigger a license suspension review.

Order a driver record online at the DPS site. A Type 2 three-year record costs $6.50. A complete Type 3 history is $7.50. Mail requests go to Texas DPS, P.O. Box 149008, Austin, TX 78714-9008.

Note: Texas eliminated its driver point system in 2019. DPS now tracks violation counts, not points, to evaluate suspension risk for Texas drivers.

Unpaid Tickets and the OMNI Program

Ignoring a Wichita County ticket leads to a warrant and a potential block on your driver license renewal. The Texas OMNI program under Transportation Code Chapter 706 allows both JP courts and municipal courts to report unpaid fines to DPS. DPS blocks your renewal until you pay the fine plus a $10 OMNI fee per ticket.

Check your OMNI status and pay holds at texasfailuretoappear.com. Each unpaid ticket adds its own hold and fee. Clearing them removes the renewal block from your license.
