Traffic Tickets in Webb County

Webb County sits on the US-Mexico border at Laredo, one of the busiest land ports of entry in the country. I-35 runs north from the international bridges through downtown Laredo and is a major DPS enforcement zone. Traffic citations here are Class C misdemeanors under Texas law. Webb County has five JP precincts, and which one handles your case depends on where you were stopped.

The Laredo Municipal Court handles citations issued within city limits by Laredo Police Department, while Webb County JP courts handle cases from outside city limits and from other law enforcement agencies including DPS and county deputies. Check your citation carefully to see which court is listed.

Paying the fine without going to court counts as a guilty plea under Art. 27.14(c) of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. That conviction is sent to DPS and goes on your driving record. If you want to contest it or seek an alternative, act before the deadline on your citation.

The county clerk at (956) 523-5400 can help identify which precinct holds your case. Webb County provides bilingual services at the courthouse, and most JP court staff are bilingual in English and Spanish.

The TOPICs public citation search at topics.txcourts.gov/CitationsPublic is a free tool that covers many Texas JP courts, including Webb County precincts. Search by citation number, name, or driver license number to find case status, court dates, and fine amounts.

If your case doesn't appear in TOPICs, call the JP court or contact the county clerk at (956) 523-5400. For Laredo Municipal Court cases, contact the city directly. The municipal court and JP courts are separate systems with separate records.

Webb County Texas traffic ticket records TOPICs citation search

TOPICs is the free statewide citation search tool run by the Texas Office of Court Administration. It's the best place to start when looking up a Webb County JP court case.

Your driving history is kept separately by the Texas DPS. You can order a copy of your driver record online to see what convictions have been sent from Webb County or any other Texas court.

What the Citation Record Shows

A Webb County traffic citation record lists the citation number, the date and place of the stop, the officer's name and agency, and the defendant's name, date of birth, and driver license number. The violation code and description identify the law that was broken. The fine and court costs are added once the court sets them.

Once the case is resolved, the record is updated to show the outcome: paid, dismissed, deferred, or warrant. These records are public in Texas. You can request them from the court or look them up online. Older cases may be in paper form at the Webb County courthouse in Laredo.

Handling a Webb County Traffic Ticket

Pay at the JP precinct listed on your citation. Call ahead to confirm hours and payment options. The total you owe is the base fine plus state court costs. Court costs can be substantial, often adding as much or more than the base fine. Ask the court for the exact total before going in.

Deferred disposition under Art. 45.051 CCP lets the judge put your case on hold for 90 to 180 days. If you stay out of trouble and meet any conditions, the case is dismissed. You pay a fee but the conviction doesn't go to DPS. This keeps the ticket off your driving record.

The Driving Safety Course (DSC) under Art. 45.0511 CCP is another option. Complete a TDLR-approved defensive driving course and get the ticket dismissed. You must request it before your court date, not hold a CDL, and not have used DSC in Texas in the past 12 months. Speeding more than 25 mph over the limit disqualifies you. A Type 3A certified driving record from DPS is required, costing $12 online or $10 by mail.

Texas DPS and Driving Records

Convictions from Webb County courts are reported to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Texas dropped its point system in 2019. Four moving violations in 12 months or seven in 24 months can trigger a DPS suspension review.

Order a driver record online at the DPS site. A Type 2 three-year record costs $6.50. A full Type 3 history is $7.50. Mail requests go to Texas DPS, P.O. Box 149008, Austin, TX 78714-9008 and take up to three weeks.

Note: Webb County and the Laredo area are part of a major US-Mexico border enforcement zone. DPS, Customs and Border Protection, and local police all have a strong presence along I-35 and US-83 in and around Laredo.

Unpaid Tickets and the OMNI Program

An unpaid Webb County ticket can lead to a warrant and a block on your driver license renewal. The Texas OMNI program under Transportation Code Chapter 706 allows courts to report unpaid fines to DPS. DPS then places a hold on your renewal until you pay the fine plus a $10 OMNI fee per ticket.

Check your OMNI status and pay holds at texasfailuretoappear.com. Each unpaid ticket adds its own hold. Clearing them lets you renew your license. The site works for both JP court and municipal court holds.

Webb County Texas traffic ticket records OMNI failure to appear

The Texas Failure to Appear site lets you check and pay OMNI holds on your driver license from unpaid traffic fines across Texas.
