Courts That Handle Tickets

Four JP precincts handle traffic violations across Matagorda County. The precinct number on your citation tells you which court to contact. All four are based in or near Bay City. If you don't see a precinct number on the ticket, or if it's unclear, call the county clerk at (979) 244-7681 to find out which court has your case.

Bay City may have a municipal court for city-issued citations. If your ticket was written by a Bay City officer inside city limits, call the city directly to confirm which court has jurisdiction. JP courts handle county and state citations, while city courts handle city police citations separately.

The Texas OCA provides a public statewide citation search at topics.txcourts.gov/CitationsPublic. You can search by name or citation number. It covers most JP courts across Texas, including those in Matagorda County.

Use the TOPICs public search tool first. Enter your name or citation number. Most results show the court contact info, case status, and any upcoming hearing dates. If the ticket is very recent, wait three to five days and search again. Courts vary in how fast they log new citations into the state system.

If you still can't find your citation after a few days, call the Matagorda County Clerk at (979) 244-7681. They can confirm whether the citation has been entered and route your question to the right JP precinct. Have the citation with you when you call. The citation number is the most direct way to locate the record quickly.

Paying Your Fine

Go to the JP precinct court listed on your ticket to pay. Call ahead to find out the total amount owed (fines plus court costs), the payment methods accepted, and office hours. Some precincts in smaller counties may operate on limited schedules. Knowing before you drive in saves time.

Paying a fine means you are pleading guilty under Article 27.14(c) of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. Texas DPS gets notified and the violation goes on your driving record. Before you pay, ask the court whether deferred disposition or a defensive driving course would be a better option for your situation.

If you missed a court date or have an unpaid old citation, check for an OMNI hold at texasfailuretoappear.com. The program places a hold on your license until the fine is resolved, and clearing it costs $10 above what you owe.

Deferred Disposition

Deferred disposition under Article 45.051 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure lets you avoid a conviction. The court holds the case open for a period, typically 90 days. If you don't get another citation during that time and you complete any conditions the judge sets, the case is dismissed. You pay a fee but no conviction goes to your record.

You must request it before your hearing date. The JP judge has discretion to approve or deny based on the circumstances of your case. Ask when you contact the court and be ready to explain your situation briefly.

Defensive Driving Dismissal

Under Article 45.0511 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, completing a defensive driving course can get your ticket dismissed. You must ask before your court date. You can't have used this option in the last 12 months, you can't hold a CDL, and the citation can't be for going 25 mph or more over the speed limit. The court requires a Type 3A certified driving record from Texas DPS at a cost of $12.

Courses are offered online and in-person through providers approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. After completing the course, send the certificate and your driving record to the court. The ticket gets dismissed with no DPS report.

Texas Driving Records

Get your driving record at Texas DPS online or mail Form DR-1 to Texas DPS, P.O. Box 149008, Austin, TX 78714-9008. Type 1 is $4.50 for three years, Type 2 is $6.50 for a full history, and Type 3A (certified, for court) is $12. Texas removed its points system in 2019, but four violations in 12 months or seven in 24 months can still lead to license suspension.
