Delta County's Two JP Precincts

Delta is one of the smaller counties in Texas. Two JP precincts serve the whole county. The precinct listed on your ticket handles your case. DPS troopers and county sheriff deputies file their citations with the JP courts. Cooper city police send their tickets to Cooper Municipal Court.

The County Clerk at (903) 395-4400 can help you confirm which court has your record if you aren't sure. Online records access is limited in Delta County, so calling is often the most direct way to get information about your specific case.

JP courts here handle Class C traffic misdemeanors. That covers speeding, stop sign violations, unsafe lane changes, and similar charges. The JP judge has authority to grant deferred disposition, approve defensive driving dismissal, and set payment plans based on your situation.

Texas courts maintain a public citation lookup at topics.txcourts.gov/CitationsPublic. Search by citation number or by your name and date of birth. The result shows the court, charge, and scheduled hearing if one is set.

Delta County's online records are limited, so if your case doesn't appear in the system, don't assume you're in the clear. The ticket may just not have been entered yet. Newly filed tickets sometimes take a few business days to show up. Call the court listed on your ticket if you don't see your case within a week.

Resolving Your Ticket

You can pay, contest, or seek an alternative resolution for your Delta County traffic ticket. In-person payment at the courthouse is the standard approach. Mail payment by money order or check is also accepted. Ask the court whether phone or online payment is available before making a trip.

Paying means pleading guilty. Article 27.14(c) of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure spells this out clearly. A conviction is reported to Texas DPS and shows on your driving record. For most people that means higher insurance costs at renewal. Ask about deferred disposition first if you want to avoid that result.

Deferred disposition under Article 45.051 is a standard option in Texas justice courts. You pay costs, stay clean for the supervision period, and no conviction is entered. Delta County JP courts grant this regularly for qualifying violations. Request it when you contact the court.

Defensive Driving Dismissal

DSC dismissal under Article 45.0511 is available for drivers who qualify. The requirements are strict: no DSC course in the last 12 months, no commercial driver's license, not stopped in a marked work zone, and speed not more than 25 mph over the posted limit. If you meet all of those, you can ask the court to approve DSC dismissal.

Once the court approves, complete a TDLR-certified course. A list of approved providers is at tdlr.texas.gov. Then order a Type 3A certified driving record from Texas DPS for $12. Submit the completion certificate and the driving record to the Delta County JP court. Ticket dismissed. No conviction reported.

Warrants and License Holds

If you miss a court date in Delta County, the JP can issue a warrant. That warrant is statewide. Any officer in Texas who runs your license or plates can see it. Don't wait. Call the court the same day you realize you missed your date and ask how to address it.

Texas DPS also uses the OMNI program to block license renewal for unresolved citations. Transportation Code Chapter 706 governs this program. A $10 hold fee applies per citation. A warrant adds $30. Check your status at texasfailuretoappear.com and pay through that site if needed to clear a hold before renewing.

DPS Record and Point System

Order your Texas driving record at dps.texas.gov. A Type 3A certified record costs $12. It shows all current violations and any hold status. Texas suspends licenses at four convictions in 12 months or seven in 24 months. Each Class C conviction you avoid through deferred or DSC counts toward keeping your license intact.

The statutes governing traffic court procedure in Texas are at statutes.capitol.texas.gov under Article 45. These cover the rules JP judges follow for Class C cases, including your rights during a hearing, how deferred works, and DSC eligibility rules.
